CHOIRS TO BE IN "RESIDENCY" AT ELY CATHEDRAL

Ely Cathedral
Ely Cathedral in England attracts 250,000 visitors a year.

The Parish Choir and Youth Choir will be leaving on July 15, 2010 for a week’s residency at Ely Cathedral, England.  In cathedrals throughout Great Britain the service of Evening Prayer  (Evensong) is sung daily by the choir, as has been the case since the beginning of the Church of England in the 16th century.  During the summer months when the resident cathedral choir is on holiday, guest choirs are invited to spend a week at the cathedral singing daily Evensong and the Sunday morning Eucharist.  Ely Cathedral issued the invitation to St. Mark’s about three years ago, following the Parish Choir’s highly successful residency at Bristol Cathedral.

Ely is a very small village approximately 65 miles northeast of London. St. Etheldreda founded the monastery in Ely in 673.  The present cathedral, begun in 1083, was completed in 1189.

The choirs will be singing daily Evensong at Ely Cathedral as well as singing the Sunday morning Eucharist.  Ely is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, England, located 14 miles north-northeast of Cambridge.  The cathedral itself is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the Medieval world.
