Welcome New Organist and Choirmaster Jon Johnson!
Jul 6, 2018 |
I am delighted to announce that we have called a new Organist and Choirmaster to serve at St. Mark’s. The call was the result of countless hours of discernment by our search committee and those who participated in our process. The search committee’s work included the review of many applications and videos prior to inviting Jon for an in-person interview. His time with us included interviews with the search committee and staff, a recital, rehearsals with our choirs, and an interview with me.
Jon Johnson, coming to us from the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, KY, was recommended without reservation by the committee. I am in complete support of their recommendation and I am genuinely excited about many years of shared ministry with him in the years to come. Jon is extremely gifted musically and is a true churchman. He understands the importance of community and our core vocation here at St. Mark’s. I am extremely grateful to the search committee and all who have made this such a thoughtful process guided by the Holy Spirit.
Jon is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. He served as the Associate Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, TN for eight years before becoming Music Director and Organist at Good Shepherd in 2015. Jon received his MM in organ performance and the Sacred Music Diploma from the Eastman School of Music, as well as his MM in choral conducting and BM in organ performance from East Carolina University.
Mr. Johnson has performed concerts across the United States and his European debut took him to Canterbury and Southwark Cathedrals, England, and Göteborg, Sweden. Jon served as the organist for all services during a week residency at Winchester Cathedral in 2014. Jon is leading his choir on a pilgrimage this summer to St. Alban’s Cathedral in the UK before joining us in San Antonio.
Jon will be with us in September in time for Homecoming Sunday on September 9th! His greeting is below.
Peace,
Beth
