Are you new to St. Mark's?

HYMNATHON 2022

The music ministry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is hosting a Hymnathon on September 16-17. Join us as we sing the entire 1982 Hymnal from 1 to 720!

What is a Hymnathon?

A Hymnathon is a marathon singing event using the complete set of hymns found in The Hymnal 1982. This is your opportunity to sing all your favorite hymns, discover new tunes and hidden gems, and strengthen our collective understanding of this rich body of music.

How long does it take to sing all 720 hymns?

It takes approximately 10 hours to sing 1 verse of each hymn with a brief introduction; our target pace will be 72 hymns per hour.

Who is singing?

You! Our hope is to have the full support of the St. Mark’s community along with strong participation from other faith communities in San Antonio through support from the local Alamo chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

When and where?

Friday, September 16 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church | 315 E Pecan Street, SATX 78205

Light meals and refreshments will be available throughout the event.

Why?

The St. Mark’s Choir is journeying to St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, July 10-23, 2023; proceeds from the Hymnathon will support the pilgrimage.

How can I help?

Underwrite a hymn! All hymns are available for sponsorship, and the starting bid is $25 per hymn. A handy online form is available below to facilitate your support and includes a link to the complete list of hymns available for sponsorship.

Support the event. The music program is grateful for any amount of support; you may support the Hymnathon with a general donation, also using the form below.

Join us in singing! Participants are encouraged to attend some or all of the Hymnathon. Choir members, parish families, community members, closet crooners, shower singers - everyone is welcome!

My favorite hymn is not on the list - how can I sponsor it?

Let us know if you would like to outbid the current sponsor using the form below. The highest bid for a hymn will receive an original hymn descant composed by Director of Music, Jon Johnson, to be featured in a church service with acknowledgment of the successful recipient in the Sunday leaflet.

Is there a hymn you simply can’t stand to sing?

Don’t worry, we’ve got that covered, too! We will also accept the highest bid to eliminate singing one least-favorite hymn in the Hymnathon.
