Are you new to St. Mark's?

Weekly Reflection: Jon Johnson, Director of Music

by Jon Johnson on June 01, 2022

St. Mark’s is a unique place in the city of San Antonio. I am drawn to St. Mark’s because of its core vocation, “feeding those who are hungry for beauty and creativity.” It is evident that St. Mark’s values beautiful music every time we enter the doors to worship or attend a concert, so I consider myself fortunate to serve in this great community of faith. With that said, I occasionally remind myself that I would be nothing without the people in front of me, the choir.
Working with all the choirs here is the highlight of my job each week. They volunteer and give so much of their time to this wonderful music ministry. I was curious to discover how many hours each of the choirs spend a year, and the time invested is amazing. The adult choir averages approximately 230 hours a year (9.5 days); and the children and youth choirs average approximately 144 hours a year (6 days). These hours include weekly rehearsals, early call times, Eucharist, Evensong, Lessons and Carols, and concerts. These are extremely dedicated folks of all ages! The next time you see one of them, give them a hug or shake their hand and thank them. In a couple of weeks, the choir will take a break for part of the summer to rest and rejuvenate for a busy music season ahead as they begin to prepare for our choir pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, in July 2023. You’ll hear more exciting details soon!
I’m also grateful for our St. Cecilia Guild. The St. Cecilia Series is a remarkable gift to our church family and the greater community. Your generosity allows St. Mark’s to sustain a broader artistic and spiritual outreach to the city of San Antonio. These offerings are free and extend an invitation for people to enter our doors who otherwise may not do so. Thank you so very much!
