Practicing Discernment: the Heartbeat of Christian Formation

The practice of discernment was the principal spiritual discipline of community worship in Paul’s churches. Following the community meal, disciples deliberated together on their lives of Christlike faithfulness. They reflected on actions and their consequences. Through this lively, interactive, improvisational process, they learned how to live Christ’s way of life faithfully and to recognize their experiences of God’s resurrection power. Practicing discernment built up relationships in the community and formed them as a body of Christ in their local setting. Join us as we explore the elements of this practice that gave the early Christians courage to resist the oppressive ways of the Roman Empire as we seek ways to reclaim it for our lives today.
