About the event
Come listen to San Antonio poet Bonnie Lyons talk about and read from her new book Miriam Talks Back and Other Voices from the Hebrew Scriptures.
BONNIE LYONS has published two full-length books of poetry and three chapbooks of poems as well as a book about Henry Roth, a volume of interviews with fiction writers, and a book of interviews with women over 80. In 2014 she retired with emeritus status from the University of Texas at San Antonio. During her long academic career she taught in Greece, Spain, England, Israel and Italy.
Have you ever wondered what the women of the Hebrew Scriptures really thought? Hang on—Lyons has spent a long time thinking about it. She has been thinking about—almost living with—the female characters in the Hebrew Scriptures for more than twenty years. Her interest in them began as a summer project. She decided to read about them and noticed that many of them had no name. As a woman and a feminist, she found this patriarchal omission distressing. What emerged is 77 imaginative, poetic stories filling the gap.
We are delighted to welcome Bonnie to St. Mark's Bookstore for this event. Please RSVP @stmarksbookstore@gmail.com to let us know you are coming. Books will be available for purchase from St. Mark's Episcopal Church Book Store. Please support this local independent bookstore!
